Lucca

The origins of the town of lucca are remembered in its name ,which comes from
o Celto-ligurian word ,Luk, meaning “marshy place”.Lucca owes its fame to some
beautiful churches The Duomo Smartino, and S.Michele in Foro.,and the Superb
Rampart Walk.
The ramparts that give Lucca its characteristic appearance run
right round the town(4km/2.5mi).The walls originally included four gateways but
in 1804 Elisa Bonaparte had a fifth opened on the east side ,known as Elisa’s gate. The ramparts were planted with two rows of trees in the 19C and now form an
unusual public park reserved for pedestrians and cyclists.
